Blogs: Micro-Blogs

Twitter
  • Twitter is a micro-blogging service which was inspired by group SMS texting, the idea would save money, and send a post to all contacts with the same 140 character limit of an SMS message.
  • As the user types into the post box, an algorithm counts down the number of characters available, if the user goes over 140, the system shows how many characters the user must delete. This system is useful as it allows the user to easily work out which words to remove, however this limits the capacity of what the user can post, therefore making it difficult to fully explain what you want to post.
The algorithm showing the number of characters that need to be removed.
  • Twitter allows users to "follow" people, this means that you will be alerted everytime that person creates a new post. Many celebrities have twitter, this means the press can be very good at using posts as gossip and potential headlines. There have been many incidents where celebrities have wrote "inappropriate" posts on twitter, this has been instantly reported by the media. The existance of the press, creates problems with twitter, and sometimes they can even read public tweets, which most people see as a breach of privacy. However, on the other hand, users can create special posts in which they can choose which of their "followers" can see the post, allowing more privacy between users.
  • If privacy is the main concern for a user, then they direct message users, this is affectively a "post" which only ONE follower can see, the 140 character rule still applies. Once again, the problem with this is that users cannot fit what they want to say easily into 140 characters.
  • Twitter has recently been in a controversial privacy issue where a website (http://pleaserobme.com/) worked out which twitter users weren't at home using keywords and GPS co-ordinates. Many people were very concerned and the owner of the site now doesn't provide the information. The information can still be found, and twitter need to fix the privacy issue urgently.

Blogger or Twitter?
  • The micro-blogging sensation is popular and is a good way to share small moments with friends and celebrities, however it is not very good for sharing long detailed blogs and there also isn't a feature available to "comment" instead the reply "@user", which can take up many character spaces in the post. Twitter is better for social use rather than work/school.
  • Blogger has much more features and "gadgets" and users can "follow" eachother in the same way as twitter, you also have the option to write lengthier posts. On the other hand it is much less popular, and is used more for professional bloggers than celebrities. If I were to choose between them, I would pick Blogger because I don't find it easy to create a post that makes grammatical sense in under 140 characters, for me this is the justification of using Blogger instead of Twitter.

Blogs: Changing The Blog Layout

My blog appeared to be very bland, it lacked the energetic style of what most blogs have. So I decided to give the blog a boost of colour and a lively background, more to create an interesting style than a useful one.
I clicked on the "Design" Tab and then onto "Template Designer".
In "Templates", I chose the design "Awesome Inc", but I still thought it lacked an interesting style:
So I then went onto the "Background" link, and instantly I could see which image would give the blog a more lively and exciting characteristic:
Finally, I tweaked the background colours, font colours and changed the font to "Georgia" in the "Advanced" link, so that the text could easily be read against the abstract background. This was so it could tailor for aesthetic needs and visual needs. The final design is shown below:

Blogs: Adding Gadgets to a Blog

When clicking the design tab at the dashboard of blogger, the user can edit the layout and add "gadgets" to the blog. When I clicked on design, the following screen appeared:

Blogger, provides a series of gadgets which one can add to their blogspot to make their blog more aesthetically pleasing, interactive and easier to use. When you click on "Add a gadget", blogger provides an online brochure of various different gadgets available for the blog:

Today, I created a bloglist gadget in the design section of my blogger account. The URLs of the blogs were added in the settings of the bloglist gadget. In the settings, we can change the name of the link so that someone looking at my blog, or myself, can easily identify what blog it is. I also added to class members so that I can easily locate their blogs and compare my work:
After adding a bloglist, I created a newsreel at the bottom of my page, this changes every few seconds to display a different news story related to ICT. When I clicked "edit" I had the option to configure which news topics appeared:

The result of adding these gadgets can be seen in the screenshots below:

Definition of the word "blog":
A journal written online which can be accessed by all users of the internet.

How are blogs different to normal sites?
A website is more of an online "portfolio" where one can display what they have to offer, whereas a blog is more like an online conversation between users of the web. A blog is more interactive and websites can have more elaborate pictures.

Why do people use blogs?
For most "bloggers", a blog is their way of expressing themselves and their area of expertise. Blogs can also be used to share problems and to resolve them with members of the online community.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a blog?
Blogs can provide a place for which people can share problems and solve them together. It can also be used as a business tool to easily provide customer service.
On the other hand, a blog can easily become less formal, this means that someone may give away too much information (such as addresses, pin numbers etc.). The blogger themselves may also not take into thought the consequences of how they are expressing their feelings, for instance someone could easily be cyber-bullied if the blogger insults them, or offends them.

How are comments useful on a blog?
Comments allow the blogger to learn from his/her readers so that they can develop future blogs. It can also provide an oppurtuniy for readers to have response from the blogger themself.
Websites Used:

How to use a blog:
When logging into your account for the first time, the user will encount the dashboard. At the dashboard the user can edit their blog and account details easily. The tabs along the top provide clear and concise shortcuts to different sections of editing the blog:

To create a new blog post the user can click the short cut "New Post" which stands out from the rest of the page to make it easy to locate:
After the button is clicked, a screen is loaded (like the one shown below). The user has a tile bar, where they can type in the post title. Along the top of where the post itself is written, is a toolbar (similar to a word processor) where the user can change the font, font size, font style, font colour, highlight colour, insert a picture, link, movie, embedded code, bullet points, numbers and a quote. This can be used to make the blog easy to read and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

The user also has the option of changing the design of the blog itself, this is located at the "design tab":

Here, the user encounters a "textless" version of their blog, here they can move around gadgets between columns and add other gadgets to make their blog more interesting. More advanced bloggers can use the "template designer" to customise the design template of their blog.

The following screen then appears along with a preview of the blog:

At this screen the user can choose a pre-designed template, as well as changing the background layout and design. Most casual users stick to templates, but more advanced users may edit the design (font colours, background colours etc.) of the template itself to suit client/friends/their own needs.
